Journeys of « Ice children » :

David Jozefovič and Irena Ašmontaitė-Giedrienė were two of these ice children. After being sent to the Altai in the first major wave of deportation from Lithuania in June 1941, they were then taken to the shores of the Laptev Sea, a bleak, icy tract at the mouth of the River Lena. Thousands of Lithuanians died there in the terrible winter of 1942. The paths of David Jozefovič and Irena Ašmontaitė-Giedrienė then diverged: David was granted early release from his special settler status, while Irena, after many procedures, was released as an orphan. Both then returned to Lithuania.
